Useful tips and information
Madame Tussauds is a wax-figure museum based in London that has locations all around the world, including the United States, Asia and Australia. The museum was founded by wax sculptor Marie Tussaud who created her first wax sculpture in 1777. Marie, born in 1761, settled down in London in 1835 and opened a museum. The museum featured sculptures of victims from the French Revolution as well as criminals. Other artists, such as Lord Nelson and Sir Walter Scott, were added to the exhibition as well, though most works were destroyed during World War II. After Marie's passing, the business was passed on to relatives, and this is where the first sculpture of a familiar figure, a young Winston Churchill, was created. The business took off from there, and today, Madame Tussauds features wax figures of celebrities, political and historical figures and has become a major tourist attraction in London and abroad.

The Life of Marie Tussaud
Marie Tussaud was born in Strasbourg, France in 1761 and studied wax sculpting with physician and skilled sculptor Dr. Phillipe Curtius, who employed Tussaud's mother as a housekeeper. Tussaud became the art tutor of King Louis XVI's sister at the Palace of Versailles. Her duties to the monarchy during the French Revolution included sculpting death masks of executed aristocrats to prove her allegiance. She inherited Dr. Curtius' wax models when he passed away in 1794 and used them in a travelling museum. She named the show Madame Tussaud's after she married Francois Tussaud in 1794. She began showcasing her own works of art throughout Great Britain in 1802 until she finally settled down with a stationery museum in 1835. Tussaud died in her sleep in 1850, and the business continued through the work of her grandson.
